Penn hoped to start a colony where all Christians could live together in peace and Penn got a colony when King Charles II owed his family money, so the king repaid Penn by giving him a large piece of land in the Middle Colonies. The region was called Pennsylvania which means "Penn's Woods."

What we need to know about Philadelphia is that William Penn planned it as his first large city. He chose a site where the Delaware and Schuykill rivers meet. During the 1700's, Philadelphia became a center of trade because Penn designed wide, straight roads that made it easy to travel throughout the city.

Benjamin Franklin is the most famous person in Philadelphia. Franklin owned a printing press in Philadelphia. He published a newspaper and a popular book of stories called, Poor Richard's Almanack.
