  • How does climate affect the way your tribe meets their needs for food, clothing, and housing?
The climate is warm in the summer so the people wore light clothing made from animal skins. They lived in long houses made of bark and wooden poles.
Haudenosaunees lived in longhouses,a type of house made from wooden poles and tree bark.
In the winter they made fires in their houses. The Iroquois got their food by farming, hunting, and fishing.
They put fences around their villages with an opening where the ends should meet so they can get out.

There were a lot of trees that provided wood for homes and cooking fires. They had rivers that they used for fishing.
They got their clothes from deerskin.
There was good soil they used for farming.

They used maple trees to make maple syrup in early spring. Children would pick berries and save them for winter.There was good soil they used for farming.They used tree bark and wooden poles for their houses.Our tribe used animals for many reasons, after they killed them they used the skin for clothing and bedding, they ate the meat, and they used the bones for utensils and tools.

Women farmed in fields around the village.Men hunted.Part of the crops that were farmed were for council meetings and festivals.The rest was for food that families ate.

They had a barter system.They traded wampum for different goods.Wampum was broken shells.They also used wampum to symbolize agreement.
  • What type of government did your tribe have?How did they handle conflicts?They had a confederation of chiefs from different tribes.Everyone in the council had to be in agreement before they took action.
  • What makes this tribe unique? They had medicine masks with crooked noses,5 tribes united to form a group,and they used wampum. The Iroquois have many traditions.The most important one the mask that men wore.No two masks were the same,though all of the masks had a crooked nose to honor the great giant.They say that the men who wear the mask have the power to cure any sicknesses.That is because there was a spirit of sickness who could make anyone sick.But then, the giant came and scared the spirit away.They believe that Sky Man dug up a tree and his wife, Sky Woman, fell through the hole from the tree.She couldn't swim,so eagles piled dirt on a turtles back to catch her.That land became North America.
